At Wooing Tree Estate, life and landscape intertwine. The vines that surround our neighbourhood aren’t just a scenic backdrop, they’re part of a real, working vineyard with deep Cromwell roots.
A Family Legacy
Wooing Tree is a family-owned, single-vineyard producer, originally established right here in Cromwell by Steve and Thea Farquharson. After careers in IT overseas and a passion for Central Otago’s potential, they returned home in 2004 to make wine and raise their family among the vines.
Their first vintage was harvested in 2005, and from that point, Wooing Tree Pinot Noir became one of Central Otago’s most recognised wines.
In 2021, as the original vineyard began its next chapter as Wooing Tree Estate, Steve and Thea expanded to a new site, Pink Moon Vineyard, a 17-hectare property nestled under the Pisa Ranges. Twenty thousand vines were carefully transplanted from the original Wooing Tree site to Pink Moon, ensuring the same award-winning quality continues today.
The Vineyard Beside the Community
The vines at Wooing Tree Estate are still actively managed, maintained by local viticultural specialists Grape Vision under the guidance of James Dicey. Every action in the vineyard follows Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand standards, balancing environmental care with the needs of a growing community.
That means:
- Using the minimum chemicals possible, and only when necessary
- Applying sprays safely in calm, early-morning conditions
- Keeping residents informed about vineyard activities through regular updates
The Vineyard Beside the Community
The vineyard follows a familiar and beautiful rhythm, new growth in spring, trimming and canopy care through summer, a flurry of excitement at harvest in April, and quiet pruning through winter. It’s a gentle reminder that life here moves in step with the land and the seasons.
Where Wine and Lifestyle Meet
Today, Wooing Tree Estate blends modern living with the authenticity of vineyard life, where families, retirees, and lifestyle seekers enjoy the best of Cromwell: open skies, good wine, and a warm sense of community.
Because here, the vines don’t just tell our story, they are our story.
