Winter Sports

Cromwell is a frosty winter wonderland for those willing to take on the slopes.

It’s hard to mention the Cromwell lifestyle without mentioning the winter sports. There is something for everyone with the ever-reliable Cardrona, the Treble Cone views,  the roller coaster terrain of Coronet Peak, or the classic The Remarkables. Choose your ideal slopes below.

Cardrona Ski Field

Cardrona is a fun and family-friendly ski resort with the most reliable snow conditions in the region. Its high elevation and southerly aspect mean dry natural snow is plentiful, which is further enhanced by snowmaking facilities.

Cardrona is the perfect place for beginners and intermediates, with its combined gondola chairlift, easy-to-use surface lifts, specialised beginner packages, and choice of wide-open trails spread over three basins.

Cardrona is also home to the NZ Park & Pipe Team, and offers the most extensive terrain park facilities in the Southern Hemisphere, with four terrain parks, two half pipes and a gravity-cross course. Boasting eight cafés, a fully licensed kids’ centre, on-mountain accommodation, retail; outlets, ski and snowboard lessons; and a fully equipped rental department, Cardrona is hard to beat.

Treble Cone

Treble Cone is the largest ski area in the South Island and is famous for its long, and unrivalled views over Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps. For beginner skiers and snowboarders, Treble Cone’s learner area is located alongside the Base lodge and café with the convenience of the ski and snowboard rental shop.

Intermediates will revel Treble Cone’s massive 700m of vertical – the longest in the Queenstown Southern Lakes District – which allows for some of New Zealand’s longest groomed trails and of course, Treble Cone’s famous off-piste terrain.

Advanced and expert riders will find a playground of open powder faces and natural half pipes in the Saddle Basin and on the Summit Slopes, and the Motatapu Chutes offer some of the steepest and most challenging terrain within the boundaries of a patrolled and protected ski area.

Coronet Peak

Spectacular roller coaster terrain makes Coronet Peak ski area one of New Zealand’s most exciting ski destinations. It’s also the home of Night Ski, offering even more skiing opportunities and an epic to party after the sun goes down.

Beginner skiers have long, wide nursery slopes to cut their teeth on, which allow maximal learning time and less lift time. More adventurous skiers can explore the whole mountain and make it their blank canvas through the twists, turns, gullies, and rollers.

One of the bonuses of Coronet Peak is that it is also open in the summer months for mountain biking and walking, or general sightseeing, with the gondola in operation to ferry you to the top – so all the hard work’s done for you.

The Remarkables

The Remarkables ski field is all about experiencing big mountain terrain, complete with sun-soaked chutes and untouched snow. Set out over seven parks, its is rated as 30% beginners, 40% intermediate and 30% advanced, so there is something for everyone. There is also a huge area dedicated to those new to the snow.

Aside from skiing and snowboarding, The Remarkables offers a broad range of activities. For sightseers there are some truly stunning views from the top of the ridgeline over the Southern Alps and fabulous aerial views of Queenstown below. Toboggan hire and snowshoe tours are also available – both of which will give a completely different experience of this remarkable ski field.
